Rick Santorum wants to be President of the United States and he wants our laws to be based solely on the Bible.  No ands, ifs or buts.  He said:

“We have civil laws, but our civil laws have to comport with the higher law.”

His higher law is the Bible. Quite frankly, I don’t want to live in a country where our laws are completely and utterly based on the Bible. I believe firmly in the separation of Church and State. If you disagree with me and think that this is a good idea, think about this: Bible law (right there in the Ten Commandments) states that

“Thou shall keep the sabbath holy”.

Um, to Orthodox Jews, the Sabbath starts Friday at Sunset and there’s no electricity or work allowed until Sundown on Saturday. Are we going to follow that law?

Oh, I can hear you, No, of course not. We’re not going back to the dark ages.

Are you sure?

You can’t be sure, not really. A crazy, religious president and you really believe that we all won’t be sitting in the dark come Friday at Sunset?

Allowing Religion in our laws is a slippery slope I really don’t want to go down. And, neither should you.

I’d like to point something out:  There’s no attack on Christianity here.  We are in the majority and wouldn’t Jesus’ disciples be surprised.  Don’t you know why we celebrate Christmas with trees and on December 25th?  Because back in the day, we could be persecuted for living out our faith.  Jesus, most likely, wasn’t born in December.  He was born in the spring, but so Christians could hide from those who would hunt them down, we moved his birth to coincide with the winter solstice.  That way, we could celebrate our faith more openly.

And, so what if Christ has been moved from our schools?  The teaching of Christ to our children shouldn’t belong to a government worker – it should belong to the parents.  And, the fuss about Happy Holidays verses Merry Christmas?  Get over it.  Businesses want to sell their products to people of all faiths.  When someone says, “Happy Holidays” just respond with “Merry Christmas”.  I do, why can’t you?

Our Christian faith shouldn’t be tied to our government.  Jesus said, “Render that which is Caesar to Caesar and render that which is God to God.” Even Christ believed in the separation of Church and State.

And, for goodness sake, quit whining!  Jesus doesn’t want wussy followers complaining all of the time.  If you have a relationship with Christ, then you don’t need your government to have one as well.  Live your life by Christ’s example.  He wasn’t whining on the cross.  Find strength in him – talk the talk and walk the walk.

And, remember His words about loving thy neighbor?  No where did he say unless the guy’s a Muslim or Jewish or any other faith.  Embrace your faith and allow your neighbor to embrace theirs.  Perhaps, when they see how you walk in Christ’s footsteps, they might want to convert or not.  It doesn’t matter to your salvation.

That said, I saw an article that stated along with the tax cut, there would be a tax raise on those making more than a million dollars. This raise would be used to offset the financial effects of the tax cut.  If there is going to be a way to make up the money Social Security loses, I would be willing to rethink my opposition to the payroll tax cut.

Since then, I’ve heard that the raise is now off the table.  Now, I’m back to my original opposition.

This makes me one of what the right calls the elite. See, I can think for myself and weigh all of the options.  The right doesn’t like people who can think for themselves.

Make sure you remember how the GOO is too busy making nice with the CEOs, who are jacking up their stock profits, while running away with their double digit raises, to care about what happens to the American worker.

When the grandsons descended on our home over Halloween, I took the three older boys to the store.  Alex and Nicholas were back in the van and Danny was helping me load up the groceries.  I saw two Army soldiers and I took the opportunity to teach Danny.  I told him who they were and said that he needed to thank them.  Danny, with the flair of a politician, thanked both of the men and shook their hands.

Start them young.  Throughout our history, our Veteran’s have kept us safe and we need to thank them.

Today is the day that we honor the men and women who gave the absolute sacrifice for their country.  Without these men and women, our country would be very different than it is today.  We wouldn’t be free, the majority of us wouldn’t speak English and we wouldn’t be the amazing country we are today.

But, I wonder about those men and women who have survive.  I wonder, do we do enough for them?  Do we show our gratitude often enough?  Do we give them our thanks?

So, here’s what I purpose for anyone reading this article – starting today – every time you see a vet, tell him or her, thanks.

It doesn’t matter where you are when you do so.  If you see a soldier, Marine or sailor in uniform, shake their hand, look them in the eye and thank them for their service.  If you see someone in a hat that says veteran on it, do the same thing.  These men and women put their lives on the line for us.  They serve their country with honor and for little pay and benefits. Their families live with the separation of war and service and they’re rarely thanked.

Remember this:  If you can read this, thank a teacher.  If you can read this in English, thank a vet.
