What book changed your life?

Posted on

When I was a kid, the Book Mobile would park in the lot next to the Open Pantry once a week. It might’ve been on Tuesdays, but I’m not sure. I would ride my book there and load up my flowery, white basket with books. On the ride home, I would pick a book out of the basket and ride home with two hands on the book and reading instead of paying attention. I’m still not sure how I made it home in one piece.  Every time I enter a bookstore, a library or a book mobile that thrill of excitement hits and I can’t wait to find something to read.

I was thinking about the excitement of books and how my life has been changed in many ways because of books.

Someone, I don’t remember who, suggested I read “Six of One” by Rita Mae Brown when I was in my late teens. I was struggling with being gay, coming out and all of the angst that accompanies trying times. The book spoke to me. A beautiful lesbian couple smack dab in the middle of the action. Oh how I wanted to know Celeste and be her confidant. Maybe, learn some of the poise she possessed.

I’m curious. What book changed your life and why?
